We (myself, husband, 2 kids) are considering a move to Jacksonville. I lived in Ponte Vedra with my mom during my high school years, and now she is living in Jax.

I left Florida after college for various reasons, but I'm finding that New England is not what I thought it would be. We are always struggling financially as everything (EVERYTHING) is so expensive... health insurance is outrageous and now required, car insurance was immediately 2.5 times what I paid in Florida with the same details, we're on an island where gas is about $3.50-$3.75 and food is double what seems normal. We can't even buy a crappy crap crap house for less than $400K.

And people are dull and depressing.

Our problem is that my husband is a house painter (he has a business here) and he has this idea that he would be forced to take an absurd $10 an hour or even worse there... Does anyone know if that is true or have an idea what manual labor seems to cost in Jax. I have a college degree and work from home, so I don't have to think about that... He's just not going to budge without real information about what to expect for such jobs.

I would say with all of the new construction that is going on it should be easy for him. Not to mention many sub-divisions that are 4 & 5 years old are starting to be repainted, there have been 10 to 12 house in my sub that have been repainted this year. The guy that did our house in Oct said he has been slammed with work. Maybe he can contact some of the larger painting contractors and feel them out.
