Im gonna move down there in next week and ive been looking for apts in good neighborhoods but i have no clue where is good crime wise. Ive found an apartment for a reasonable price at The Preserve at Cedar River. Does anyone have any feedback about this apt complex and the neighborhood its in. First, welcome to Jacksonville. Jax is a large city with a wide mix of neighborhoods to choose from. You're wise to try and research "up front" as you pick a new community, particularly the first time away from home.

I'd review the area you're considering very carefully. I've never spent much time in that neighborhood (I'm more familiar with the Roosevelt Blvd area), a quick review of 3 sites provides very mixed signals, so you should dig further.

MetroJacksonville has a great overview of the Confederate Point community and very nice photos doe this summer. Suburban Jacksonville: Confederate Point | Metro Jacksonville. The waterfront features of the apartments there are quite enticing. However, one of the posters noted:

When my family first moved to Jacksonville in '89 when lived in the Confederate Point Apartments for about a year. Entirely different neighborhood 20 years later. The inland homes are still very nice but the apartment complexes are a totally different story.
Also, the Florida Times Union is the local paper in Jacksonville. Their web site, Jacksonville News, Sports and Entertainment | jacksonville.com has good search features. Searched for "Confederate Point" and the stories that came back were nearly all about crimes, most of them violent.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office web site offers you the ability to get metrics of police reports by crime type (for offenses committed and attempted) for the last 6 months within a half mile of any Jacksonville address except the Beaches (JSO | Jacksonville Sheriffs Office Disclamer (http://maps.coj.net/crimestatsdiscl.asp?sJAxGIS=Y - broken link) and click through the disclaimer or take the tutorial). When I typed in the address of this complex, the counts are higher than I'd expect.

Given the information I saw, I'd look elsewhere, but of course I'm an older female and am very cautious about safety. Still, if I were your mom I'd ask you to keep looking a bit more, as well. I hope some of these links will help you in your research to find the perfect starting point for your time in Jacksonville. I'd suggest using those tools to review any apartment or area that you're considering during your research.

Younger people tend to graviate towrds two general areas: the Beaches and the areas around there (Jax Beach, Neptune Beach, Atlantic Beach) and Downtown, and the neighborhoods around there (Riverside & Avondale, San Marco, Springfield).

There's alot to like about both.

Riverside probably has the greatest concentration of young people in any one neighborhood.

...or just drive there and see it as the focal point of the city for the live-work-play under 40 crowd...
