So, the ticks have gotten absolutely horrendous here in the past few weeks and with 10 dogs, I'm looking to find a way of protecting my senior wieners against them for less than $200 a month in spot-on treatments.

So far, it looks like the two most recommended natural tick deterrents are essential oils: Rose Geranium and Lemon Eucalyptus. There is, of course, conflicting information on how effective (and for how long) each is.

Anyone have any experience that I can use to guide me?

I would think the most effective deterrent is keeping the dogs inside - out of the woods - etc. I was gardening a couple of weeks ago. With gloves. Came inside - took off my clothes - and took a shower. And I wound up at 5 am the next morning with a big tick on my hand. Don't have a clue exactly how it got there - but I suspect it got in my hair - or something like that - and wound up on my hand (I sleep face down on my arm). And - since I didn't pull the tick out correctly (who could at 5 am when half asleep) - the bite area is still bothering me. Robyn

Doesn't sound like the safest stuff in the world to me:

Diatomaceous Earth Safety
Diatomaceous Earth is regarded as safe and non-toxic when taken in the recommended doses. Do not inhale this product. Diatomaceous Earth is a fine powdered dust that can cause eye and respiratory irritation. Keep out of reach of children. Safety in pregnant or nursing women, or those with severe liver or kidney disease is not known. This DE is not the same thing as the DE used in swimming pool filters. Pool grade DE is Diatomaceous Earth produced for pool filters and it is treated with heat, causing the formerly amorphous silicon dioxide to assume crystalline form. Pool grade DE should never be used for pest control. Swimming pool DE ranges from 60% to 70% free silica!

For the "close in" yard, I've already got some on order. My problem is something non-toxic that I can use on the dogs. I didn't fence in close to 3 acres to restrict them to a small area near the house, so I need something I can use that will discourage the little demons from getting on the dogs themselves.
