wow. I mean, the methodology used is not what you'd think when you think of "Top Shopping Cities," hence all the other surprises on the list. But still very cool to be on there!

We love our driving excursions north to shop in JAX! Now the word is out so I guess we'll be in good company.

From the article, "our best cities are based on the nation's largest cities (600,000 to 8 million) what they have to offer in terms of total number of retail locations and malls, sales tax, consumer price index and, yes, number of Walmarts. "

Well, we definitely have the upper-hand on the number of Walmarts per capita, lol!

JMHO, but the shopping here is just ok--nothing that special. I still prefer to shop up in the DC/NoVA area although traffic can be a headache, at least they are always well-stocked and have a number of flagship stores.

Apparently Dallas and Phoenix have us beat on this one.

If Wally world is what more shoppers want than Neiman Marcus, and we offer this, then obviously we'll make the list.

Wow Jax over Miami or San Francisco or LA or Chicago? I see another crappy Forbes list! Especially when part of the criteria is based on the # of Wal Marts! There are only 5 Wal Marts in Dade County & not one is within the city of Miami. I believe SF & Chicago also lack Wal Marts within their city limits.

I think the purpose of the list was to rank cities on shopping utility. Of course Jax isn't a competitor on the fine retail scene (and Miami is), but Jax has stores that everyone can afford, low sales tax (seemed to be a criteria), lower traffic (shopping is pointless if you can't get there or if you spend more time in line than shopping), and good outlets. Basically, 95% of Americans can come to a city like Jax, or Philly, or Phoenix, or Dallas, and walk out happy with the experience and not feeling like they need to win the lottery to get their money back.

You can find just about anything you can buy in Miami somewhere in Jacksonville, but not every store is a Balenciaga or a Valentino.

I saw this in the news today. Many are in disbelief that Jax would make a Forbes List. I guess this explains that other "Jacksonville is rich" thread
