This is a bit of an odd observation I know, but...

The grocery stores in St. Louis are insane compared to what's here. They're pretty much food destinations in the STL burbs. The Schnucks that was put in near us has a bistro, walk in beer cooler, full culinary school on the 2nd floor, just massive bakery and delis... Compared to the Publix in Nocatee I'd say it's somewhere between 2 to 3 times the size and it's only a mile or so from the next grocery. Another oddity is that pretty much every grocery in STL has self-checkout lanes and a bank branch (not just an ATM). I don't think I've seen any self-checkouts here outside of Costco.

On the flip side the employees at every Publix I've been to have been some of the nicest people I've ever met. Even the high-schoolers that are probably just working for weekend cash are always extremely, almost overly polite. That and the Publix branded food is actually pretty darn good compared to name brand where the STL grocery branded food was often mediocre.

Alright... random observation concluded. Thanks for listening.

Winn Dixie's have self check-out lanes. And Publix used to have Bank of America branches at some of their grocery stores. I don't believe that they still do though.

Publix pretty much has a monopoly in Florida so they don't have to keep up like many from out of state are used to. Winn Dixie isn't real competition. Food Lion is closed now but Jax was the only place they had stores. I agree the supermarket situation is frustrating here but Publix in Jacksonville is way better than the Publix i've grown to hate in south Florida. Just be glad for that, I know I am.

I would love to see Wegmans open stores down here. Now THAT is a destination grocery store. If you can call it that given the pub, huge hot buffet, bakery, cheese shop, coffee shop, deli, prepared food, fresh seafood, etc. that they have in addition to groceries.
