My bf has been offered a job in Jacksonville FL and I will be going with him if he decides to go for it. I need as much help as possible. He has this week to decide and the move might be ASAP. I was going to a community college so where is a community college in Jacksonville? Where are SAFE neighborhoods for me to start looking to rent? How is life in Jacksonville? I come from Chino, Ca and he' from Redondo Beach Ca. I have read in some other places that in Jacksonville there are not a lot of Hispanics/Latinos (we are Mexican) is it an accepting place?

I do not think it will be a complete culture shock but there are some differences. I guess Chino and Redondo kind of make a Jacksonville in a way. There is not many people of mexican heritage but their are some. There are more of the Puerto Rican persuasion. Lots of american whites and blacks. Very humid. Southern fried, Religion, pick up trucks with the flag of the stars and bars. Much more affordable than LA, but a lot of driving because the city is very spread out like LA.

Community college (many campuses, also fofers some 4 year degrees): Florida State College at Jacksonville

"SAFE" neighborhoods are all over. Budget, lifestyle, size of apartment, & what you want to be close to are imporant to know before anyone can make a recommendation.

Jax does not have a high % of hispanics in general....but my wife is...sort of (half Mexican).

Here's some other comparisons, LA to Jax: Elements of Urbanism: Los Angeles | Metro Jacksonville

Elements of Urbanism: Hollywood, CA | Metro Jacksonville

Jacksonville is 19% cheaper than Los Angeles :: Cost of Living Comparison

We do have a Hispanic/Latino/Mexican "taste" here, but nothing like you'd find in Chino or areas around there. A much larger population is there in So Calif than here. Actually, we have only found one Mexican Restaurant here that could compare to the ones in So Cal and we party there on Cinco De Mayo!

We use to live in So Calif and know Chino and Redondo Beach quite well. The weather here is definitely different.......as far as humidity and t-storms go. Sometimes we can really "rock and roll" here with downpours and lightning. Chino and Redondo can get hot, but don't have anywhere near the humidity that we get in the summer. Just and FYI about that. Some folks can grow to handle the heat/humidity thing, while others simply hate it. It took us a Spring/Summer to get use to it, but still get pretty sweaty.

Thanks you've all been so helpful. My bf's soon to be boss told him to look into renting a place in the jacksonville beach area. Anyone know of any good apartments? Studio or 1 bedrooms. We won't need a lot of space it's only us 2. As far as location like being close to shopping and things like that it really doesn't matter to me we will be absolutely alone out there so I'm sure we won't mind killing time driving somewhere. I would like it to be somewhere near a community college no more then 20 min away.

Once again thank you guys for all the advise

i met a guy at the gas station. He said he grew up in L.A, on the 1960s... said that Jacksonville reminds him of L.A. from back then.

A someone else said there are not a lot of Mexicans here. Largest Hispanic group is Puerto Rican then probably Cubans. The Hispanic population is growing though

Jax Beach is good for young people as there's a lot of house parties, clubs and bars in the area. But for some people it can be a little overwhelming. You should be able to find something suitable and affordable around that area.

It would be a 10-15 min drive to Florida State College's South Campus, which has the most course offerings. That should work out for you. And in that same area is the St Johns Town Center which has all the shopping you could hope for in Jax.

We would love to find an apartment in Jacksonville Beach then Im 24 and he's 32 so we like going out. I'm really focusing on that area but every place wants a 1yr lease and he is soooo close with his family he doesn't know if we will be able to stick it out so, I have to look for a place that would accept month to month lease. I think I'm more excited then he is, he's actually kind of dreading it.

My cousin is from Upland and he had some trouble in HS and came to Middleburg( and exurb/suburb of Jax) to finsh HS while living at my parents. it was a bit of a culture shock but he liked it after a few month.. ended up married to a Mississippi girl.

Jax Beach is a definite Beach town... very cool place to live. 20 yrs ago it was dirt cheap but compated to california you will be pleased w rent prices
