Today I had some time to kill while waiting for my son, so dropped by Hala, a middle-eastern store on University, just south of Beach. I have eaten lunch there on a number of ocassions and the food is great. They have a great buffet in their restaurant for lunch. I always get my favs, but then have to try new things. So my favs list keeps expanding. This is the first time I had time to browse through their market adjacent to the restaurant.

Once I saw the tubs of olives, I whipped out my camera to share pix with you and here are some of the great things you will find there:

Laith didn't act as though he thought it was strange at all that some woman wanted to take his pix next to the olives!

Then a cooler of fruits and nuts caught my eye. I got some dried mango.

I just had to get some of these dates. I ate one on the way home...yummy. Can't wait to pop some cream cheese into some of them them tomorrow!

Needing some cumin, I headed to their spice aisle.

Can you say pastries? They sell these individually, as well as in larger amounts.

And they have great bread that is baked daily. Fresh pita is a different animal from the stuff in the grocery store. I bought some round, puffy bread the size of a saucer....my son couldn't resist and ate one before we got home. They have more on hand in the a.m., but it goes fast!

Lots of canned goods- some I could identify and others that I will have to explore after checking my cook book.

I didn't get a picture of the frozen foods or the cheeses, but they had a good selection. Even French and Greek feta.. wonder what the difference is?

When I was checking out they had spinach pies at the register, so I grabbed one of those and Laith gave me a piece of halva- don't know why I never tried it before, but I will be sure to buy some when I return.

Gotta love Hala!

Great pics! Sometimes I'll just run in and grab some of their Spinach breads at the counter (sort of like a spinach-pie-bread-thing) and I'll have a cheap, easy portable lunch with plenty of leftovers .

Their location in San Jose on San Jose Blvd @ St. Augustine Road (in the shopping center across from Starbucks on St. Aug Rd) is very much the same - there's the restaurant part, take-out and the grocery section.

Karla, I'm having visions of hiding some hummus and tabouli inside of your next hamburger......hee, hee, hee !

Okay, spotted at the Publix on san Jose at I-295...not little Italy, but more bulk olives.

I guess those olive/salad displays made their way north. Sweet.

HIF

Thanks again for this post on olives. This really does improve my quality of life....knowing that Publix can offer me olives....and I do see fresh mozzarella balls in there too! This is fantastic news.
