My family will be transferring to NAS Jacksonville in December. I have two children, 13 & 10 so looking for good schools and a great place to live. This will be our last transfer so we are looking for our dream home. We lived in Mayport aprox 12 years ago and always wanted to come back and call Jacksonville home.

We are looking for a safe neighborhood with plenty of amenities such as community pool, golf, running/walking trails etc... we are searching new homes between 400-500k. Looks like Eagle Harbor would be the right fit, any other areas we should be looking at?

Can anyone provide me information about the schools around Eagle Harbor? What does the CCD include? How far is it to NAS?

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

This previous thread mentions some. I don't know the area, therefore can't comment.

Lots of NAS Jax people in Eagle Harbor. It's about 10 miles away.

We moved here 11 years ago when our only child was 12. He made friends quickly. Lots of activities, three pools, tennis, golf, sidewalks everywhere for walking/jogging/biking, walk or bike to Doctors Lake. Loads of kids. Favorite mode of transportation for teenagers too young to drive is the golf cart (have to be 14 to drive the golf cart). You can get a lot of house here in your price range.

Go to eagleharboronline.com for answers to all of your questions.

Also check out Fleming Island Plantation, a little further south. It has a golf course but it's not a "golf cart community" where you can drive them on the streets, although they're considering it: fipcommunity.com

My daughter, son in law and 2 grandchildren 11 and 9 live and have lived in Eagle Harbor for quite some time. You can find your dream home and my grandsons go to the public school in Eagle Harbor. They are getting a wonderful education. The park district offers them tennis, golf...and many other sports. They are physicians in the Jax area. I think you would find this area just perfect. My son was at NAS Jax about 19 years ago and has always wanted to come back as well.

A great neighborhood "near" NAS would be Ortega. For the golf and tennis, you would have to join the Timaquana Country Club. It's less than 2 miles to NAS from Ortega though. and most homes in there at your price range already have pools.

Eagle Harbor is in Clay County, a very conservative area where the CC school superintendent is elected by the voters and the only qualifications to run for this most important office is that the candidate has to be 18 years old and a registered voter. Clay County schools have been highly ranked in Florida but I wonder how long that will last with the newly elected school superintendent. I personally know some very hardworking and dedicated teachers and because of them, the schools will probably remain successful despite the person who is now in charge. If schools are a high priority and you don't mind living in a county totally under one-party rule, then Eagle Harbor probably has all of the community amenities you are looking for.

CDD fees are high in Eagle Harbor. There are other developments in Fleming Island that do not have the CDD fees or they are lower. There is a YMCA branch on Fleming Island as well which might be an option. Especially once the kids get older and move away. I have some friends whose kids are leaving for college and they don't use the amenities like the kids did but they have the high CDD fees still.

That being said there are some really nice houses in there

Eagle Landing in Orange Park is really nice. The amenities are wonderful (golf, adult lap pool, diving boards, huge slide, kids mini golf, workout facility, indoor basketball court) the people are nice, and the schools are good. You can get a really pretty, newer home for what you have to spend. My husband and I thought this was our last place to move since he has less than 3 years left in the military but we are trying to get moved somewhere else....Not a big fan of Jacksonville.

And what does being "Conservative" have to do with it? And the board is elected, too, right?

Sounds like checks and balances to me. Government by the PEOPLE not political hacks making appointments.
