I really appreciate all the info everyone is taking the time to share. Another question, can a person get around the island by walking or biking or is a car necessary for things like grocery shopping or going to the pharmacy?

Depends on how physically fit you are and where you are living

Seriously from where Publix is.....two pharmacys a Walmart, Win Dixie and many small resturants are extremely close by. From there it would be less than three miles to the downtown distirict.

I am not the most physically fit and I could survive without a car with a small scooter easily and not have to venture out to high traffic area's.

A lot of the island is very walkable/bikeable, especially where the main grocery and drug stores are.

It really depends where you live, how much you shop/need, and how physically fit you are.
I would not want to live on the south end of the island without a car, but that's just me.

You bring up a good point about not having a car period, but if you needed to get to a grocery store, Harris Teeters is a great grocery store, and that mall has a liquor store. Lets not forget that the island itself is only 12 miles long and about 3-4 miles wide, with bike paths almost over the entire island. With all the old growth canopied trees, it is pleasant even in the summer.

To me, few places in this country compare to Amelia Island, especially on the plantation.

All very good points. I prefer living on the north end, but for bike riding it's hard to beat the plantation area. When we first moved here, I was especially relieved at the small size of the island because I tend to be directionally-challenged.

I know nothing is truly far away here. But the sun does not always shine. And what if the OP needs to get to Jacksonville? I wish we had public transportation. We do have the Council on Aging bus for elders, but I'm talking about *real* public transportation.

But mostly it is pretty convenient here. I'm close to work, groceries, doc, movie theater, downtown, beach.

I really do not fully appreciate the quality of life here but my wife and daughters do.

As far as beach towns go I believe we are a great example of a balanced community where most needs can be met on the island or a short distance off island. The one drawback would be specialized medicine, but that has been rapidly improving with more specialist opening offices here.

Yes, this has really improved quite a bit, and makes a big difference.
