Hi all,

Moving to a new home and we've been advised to get a water softener. Having experienced hard water in my last home, I understand why.

What I'm lacking is knowledge about the systems. There's units you buy yourself, then there's units which are installed by companies....I'm looking for knowledge from those in the area about water softeners. Please chime in!

Thanks

I bought a RainSoft system in 2000 for my first home. It has made every move I've made and is still running strong. I can't speak with any authority on the differences between the dozens of brands/models out there, but I'm pretty sure you have to get the ones that are resin-based and use some sort of salt/potassium to recharge the resin on a regular basis. The electrical devices that wrap around the pipes don't do anything to remove the mineral content in the water. There has to be an ion exchange, which can only come from physical contact with the water. (that's about as techincal as I can get)
