We are building a new home in PVB and are wondering on the water quality in the area. When asked, the builder mentioned getting a water filter installed in the home but didn't seem to know much about the necessity of a water softener? Is the water hard? Coming from an area with hard water we are all too familiar with the importance of a water softener to protect the plumbing, appliances and clothing! Do most people in the area have water softeners? Would appreciate any advice and also any input with respect to gutters- the home will not come with them, we have always had them, living in The northeast, but not sure of the necessity in Florida. Thanks!

The water is hard, softner is up to you I suppose, you kinda get used to it...

The gutter thing was pretty baffling to me too when we moved here, never considered a house wouldn't have them, especially with the monsoon like rain we get here during storms. If you dont need them here, you don't really need them anywhere. We have strategically placed gutters where the roof lines come together and funnel water down the front of the house so it's not a waterfall in one spot.

The water is hard and my house came with a water softener.

Are you on "city" or well water? Assuming the former - the water is hard and most people (including us) have water softeners. The water has a lot of minerals. And - even with a water softener - plumbing fixtures can get gunked up more frequently and to a greater extent than they might in other areas. If you're on city water - no need for a water filter - but that's just my opinion. YMMV.

I think gutters are necessary here - but most builders don't. FWIW - we just had some gutter work done by this outfit:

AA Gutter Services > Home

And can recommend it highly. Note that this outfit has several crews. Our installers were Asan and Philip and they were great. Robyn

We had the water tested when we moved in and the quality is quite low. Softener and filters highly recommended!
