Im doing some travelling soon and want to spend a few months or more in the Downtown area, not too far from Greyhound (no wheels). Main concern is i try to avoid the secruity deposit by renting at weekly places (motels, apts.) to make moving out easier, just in case i dont like the place or atmosphere. Ive done San Diego, Oakland, Sacramento, Los Angeles, that way, and it always works out better than getting stuck into the "bad neighbor situation" or the 30 day notice problem. Being a frequent traveller, the monthly rental thing just doesent work, especially if a new city beckons, however funds are limitted to $125 weekly, or $500 monthly (comfort zone). Starting from the Bay area, most expensive, this should be easy. Oakland is starting to suck hind tit, right about now, and its time for a radical change. Being Retired Navy, Jax should also help with the 'something-to-do' routine. Just curious about mass transit in the Downtown area out to the Navy bases, and the best beaches for metal detecting for old coins and such. Dont plan to venture far from Downtown, because i hear Jax isnt very walker friendly. My next place might be Pensacola, as i will try to navigate around Navy bases to make things a bit better.

Sorry buddy.

The only cheap Downtown housing will be really crappy rooming house type places, or super sketchy "hotel" (aka rooming houses): The Palms Hotel - Jacksonville, Florida (FL) | Company Profile

The only relatively inexpensive decent hotel Downtown is the Extended Stay America, on the edge of Downtown: Jacksonville - Riverwalk, Overview - Extended Stay America. The rest will be much more expensive.

For really cheap hotels, check Phillips Highway. Which isn't really Downtown and is pretty sketchy.

Mass transit is Jax is not good. In Downtown and the surronding neighborhoods it's just "ok", the rest of Jax is awful.

The beaches are about a 30 minute car ride from Downtown. If taking a bus, expect and hour ride or so.

Wish I could have better news for ya!

Same exact dismal news from tripadvisor. Almost word for word. Maybe Atlanta would be a better first stop. Still want to see jax later on. Ty for411.

Not sure what the cost of the extended stay on the riverwalk would be with military discount, but here is about the cheapest option I see on airbnb

60/night or 350/week:
Beautiful Downtown Jacksonville in Jacksonville

1075/month:
NY City Style Loft - Near Downtown in Jacksonville
