I was wondering which of these home improvement chains people prefer. Is there much of a difference in terms of variety of stuff, quality, service or pricing between the two? Or do we just shop at the one that is closest? To me they are pretty much the same, competing for the same customer.

Personally, I consider them to be the same. They are both seem to be like a division of Walmart that specializes in home improvement items. As soon as the Chinese figure out how to make a cheap toilet, they'll be selling those there, too.

They are both the same, IMO.

And I would like to know how they can have six gazillion square feet of merchandise, yet go to get the parts to rewire a lamp and you're SOL.

I prefer Lowes. I like their selection better and the stores are better. I have equal access to both since I am a few minutes away from Regency.

I like both but Lowe's store seems to be a little neater in appearance.

HIF gave me a great big laugh with the comments about SOL on the lamp rewire!

I have to agree with Denise in Fla. I like both, but Lowes is neater in appearance and I find the local Lowes to be much brighter and better stocked. My husband refers to Lowes as HD for women. Humph!

The reason you can't find lamp guts is that if they don't make the instructions so that everyone can understand them, someone will mess up rewiring their lamp and they will sue Home depot, the wiring kit manufacturer, the printer that printed the instructions and the original manufacturer of the lamp. They should sue their parents for not teaching them to accept responsibility for their actions. It's a whole lot less risky for the store to just not carry things that might get someone hurt.

Both about the same for me. Since there is no Lowe's in Fleming Island or Middleburg, I have been shopping at HD.

same stores carrying different brands on certain items. they also price match each other so it makes it no difference where you shop. just depends on which one happens to be closer or have sales on what you need at the time.

The fact of the matter is they want you to purchase another lamp, not lamp parts. One of the secrets of their store displays is to force you to buy stuff that you don't need. But this is true of any store not just these two. Here's an example. Today I needed to buy one 9-volt battery for a digital clock that required just one battery but I was told that I could not buy just one battery, I had to buy two. I don't need two.
