We get love bugs when they are in season, but nothing like the horror stories I've heard...they're more like a mild nuisance here for a brief period.

Ticks are here in good numbers if you live near the woods. I've never had one on me, but at various times in the year I have to pull them off the dogs (I don't use anything on the dogs to kill the ticks, only heartworm meds, so I have to manually pull the ticks off ).

Riveree -- you made me smile. I'd never seen a love bug until I got to Jax. Calling them a MILD nuisance is nice way of saying they're really, really, really annoying for a short period of time.

I will never be able to get the picture of my three year old running around in circles batting at love bugs like a deranged person when we first ventured outside during love bug season!!

Best thing about love bugs as opposed to other bugs is you get to swat two at a time. Horrible way to die ... while mating.

I'm moving from the Midwest, any problems with love bugs while out walking, running, or riding a bike?

It's not an issue here. One of the main carriers for the disease - a type of mouse - is not native to this area.

Never say never of course, but the risk is very low here.

Coming from Lyme Disease central, Long Island, NY, it's certainly refreshing to know that there are minimal cases of Lyme in FL. From what I'm reading, there's an average of 51 cases per year in FL and of those cases 70% are people who've been exposed to infected ticks outside of the state of Florida.

Still it's best to err on the side of caution. Up here deer, raccoons, opossum, field mice, rats, etc., in addition to domestic pets, are vectors. I can rattle off a dozen people I know who have been diagnosed with Lyme, some later than others.

One thing we don't have is Love Bugs, and so far all of my visits to the lovely state of Florida haven't been in Love Bug season
