The father of a dear (deceased) friend of mine passed away this week and I'd like to visit his widow. The family is Jewish and I don't know if it's proper for me, as a Christian, to visit while she sits sheva. I've looked for the answer on the Internet and found nothing that addresses this question. If you have any info you could share, I'd certainly appreciate it. I want to pay my respects, but I wouldn't want to offend this family for anything. Thank you!

Paying a shiva call
I think sitting shiva is different to different Jews.
Orthodox Jews might handle it differently from the less conservative Reform Jews. I hope the link is helpful.

I am Jewish (raised conserviative, ans married a shiksa ). When my father passed in 2001, I was comforted by those of all faiths who were a part of my life. It's nice just to have that support, wherever it comes from. Hope this helps.

Shalom Cellson,

I'm Reform Jewish, and this is the time to visit the grieving family. It's called, "Shiva Call." It doesn't matter what faith you are, you will be received most gracely. This all helps in the healing process to have friends family around.

I've visited several friends who were sitting shiva. It never ocurred to me that I would not be welcomed. I did get a laugh once, though, when I brought frozen yogurt on my visit.
