Our family is a family of five with children ages 12, 10 and 1. We are African-American and run a home-based business, so we are not concerned about having to commute.

We currently home school, but will want our children to go to a public high school. What areas of town should we consider given that we want to be in an area with the best schools that has some diversity.

Mandarin has a well-rated High School, you might want to look into Mandarin.

The Flemming Island area of Orange Park his a nice, safe place with a good school. However i would say that the high school is not particularly diverse.

If you'd like to live at the beach, Jacksonville/Neptune/Atlantic, Fletcher High School has a wonderful reputation re: academics. The zip codes are, 32250, 32233 and 32266 welcome to Jacksonville!

I second Fletcher, I grew up at the Beaches and I ended up at Fletcher. It's a good school. There is a lot of diversity there.

From what I know about school systems around JAX, Duvall county schools aren't the greatest. I have had numerous people reccomend St. Johns county (Ponte Vedra) schools. Where ever you go, stay away from Sandalwood... Not too safe, lots of violence.

And I know parents who have their children at Sandalwood and are happy with their childs' education there. My sons graduated from the Duval County School system, and I was pleases with the education they received from the school system. There are many, many wonderful and dedicated teachers in the DCPS, who are an important part of a child's trip through "education-land." St. John's County and Clay County do not have better teachers than Duval County.

The kids in my neighborhood attend Sandalwood - it's the largest high school in Duval, so a lot of neighborhoods feed into Sandalwood. It's not well-rated from an FCAT perspective, but I would not classify it as unsafe or violent. Overcrowded, yes (and the county is working on alleviating that), but violent, no. I realize the media would try and have you believe otherwise, but the reality is that it's simply an overcrowded school that needs some attention to get it back on track.

Riverside is also a good area. It has Lee High School, which is highly diverse. I attended and graduated from high school there.

Yep. I have found that one cannot believe what is said about the schools.
Thanks for posting the above. I would give you reps, but it won't let me.
