Hello all,
first let me just say Im in the Military and one of my choices for my next unit is Jacksonville. Ive done some research online and it looks like a great place so Im thinking of buying a house there. Im married and have small children so my night life is pretty mellowed out by now. Im just needing some help in finding a nice, quite neighborhood for a middle income family and also what neighborhoods to stay out of. My future unit will also help in this and Im from Fla so I have an idea of what awaits me in Jax, but Im still wanting to hear from the locals. Please help! Thanks

Also, I did see the quick reference crime map posted above, but would still like to hear from real people about what they know. Thanks

What kind of military are you - and where will you be stationed. For example - if you're Navy and may be out at sea for 6 months at a time - perhaps your family will be better off in places other than Mayport - especially if your wife works and her job is in another part of Jax. Robyn

Im Coast Guard and Im rotating from a ship in Alaska. I should be working out of Cecil Field. Im thinking of the out skirts of jax, like west of Cecil.

Congrats on your move to Jax! What's your upper end price point? Lots of houses on the market here, so you'll certainly have your pick. There are some good areas not far from Cecil. I have a rental in the Crystal Springs area that I have no problem keeping rented. They all like it there.

If you like the idea of a master planned community, there are two close to Cecil Field. These communities are great for families, good schools, close to shopping, etc. There could be houses within your price range there (whatever your price range may be).

We're Navy.....my husband works at NAS Jax and we live in Oakleaf Plantation. He always says he wishes Cecil was still open to Navy Squadrons because he'd be at work really fast!!!

We love the neighborhood....in fact this weekend we spent it at our pool and all I could think was how glad I was that we moved into this neighborhood. Good schools, friendly neighbors and alot to do! They are also getting ready to build more homes out here.....(well according to my real estate friend).

Message me if you have area specific questions!!

If you think you'll only be here for a year or two - I'd rent - not buy (unless someone else picks up your relo costs). I cannot tell you when the market will bottom out - or when it will start to improve - but it is pretty awful now (and there are a lot of rentals on the market because people can't sell their houses).

I am not very familiar with the area near Cecil Field - but it gets fairly rural out on I-10 in a hurry when you're driving west (places like Macclenny). Not sure if this would be your cup of tea. I'd suggest getting together with a good buyer's real estate agent (in person - on line - or on the phone) - and letting him/her walk you through the options. Robyn
