I have been reading through some posts on here and have seen quite a few about applying out of state but still a little confused. Here is my situation, I retire from the Air Force in about a year. I am relocating from Kansas City, MO area back to home in Boston, MA. I will have roughly 80 days of paid leave upon my retirement which means I can depart Kansas City, MO and will still be paid by the Military until the 80th day which then becomes my official retirement date. Realistically I would like to land a job before I ever depart Kansas City, MO but I'm sure realistically that will be tough. For resumes should I list a family members address as my local address? Relocation is completely paid by the Military from my final destination to the place I choose to live as long as its in the United States. So a company will not have to pay for relocation. Should I mention that in the cover letter? I know i'm a year out but everything I do I plan to the minute detail lol. Thanks for any tips you can provide.
The higher skilled/professional or whatever you want to call it the position is, the less they care about stuff like where you are located at when you apply. It is expected that professionals will relocate for jobs; it is not expected people will relocate for a $10.hr job.
I don't think that you should list a false address on your resume--then, the employer might expect you to meet him/her promptly for a second round interview, but that won't be possible because you are still in Missouri. However, on cover letters, make sure you mention that you are trying to relocate to the Boston area.
However, if you are still going to be employed in Missouri for about a year, it would not be a good idea to start applying for any positions now since most positions are recruited on a just-in-time basis. However, if you want a Federal Government positions (which can take a long time to fill), then start applying for these types of jobs soon.
You could try to network with companies in Boston right now so that they know who you are.
I live next to Whiteman AFB and I'm basically trying to do the same thing (not Boston though). I haven't had any luck hardly at all (I've only been applying to out of state jobs) but I don't know if that's because I'm a new college graduate or something. There could be a lot of reasons I guess, it probably also depends on what kind of job you want. But I've been doing what seems like people normally suggest on this board (making it clear in the cover letter that I'm willing to relocate).
