So I've completed my graphic design and printing course at school and I'm going to be job hunting pretty soon. Since I don't see alot of jobs in the field advertised where I am, I'm thinking about just going to companies in person and giving them my resume and cover letter. Will employers find this annoying, to have someone drop by to apply for a job when they didn't advertise one? I think it's okay since I hear that a majority of jobs are not advertised.

How would I handle this? Do I simply give my resume and cover letter to a receptionist or ask to speak with a hiring manager? What do you guys think? I'd also like to hear from any employers here to know what most of you think about this method of job hunting.

I would do it. No question about it, I would do it.

Seriously, what the heck you got to lose, not getting a job where no job was available?

That you might annoy someone that wasn't going to hire you anyway? BFD!

In your field every job you do apply for that is advertised will have a minimum of 100 and possibly 1,000 or more applicants so honestly, what are your chances there?

Seriously, I see these kind of silly sissy questions all the time in this forum but up until now I have been able to ignore them but I can't anymore. What's the matter, you guys going to college what did they give you for lunch, anti-testosterone pills? For Christ's sake don't be such Nancy boys and go in and ask!

"I applied four weeks ago and not having heard a word should I call the HR people?" Yeah, why the hell not? Give me one single good reason why you wouldn't and why didn't you call three weeks ago?

Stop your damn groveling!

Some companies let you post your resume even if they have no openings. If one comes up perhaps you have the leg up.

That field was hard hit by the economy as cutbacks were made in marketing that ended up with graphic designers laid off. If you can't find anything else, to get some experience call at local sign shops. You will do more production than design work and not make much more than about $15/hour but it will give you some experience while you keep looking. Around here several sign shops went out of business in 2008-2010 but those left are starting to get busy again as housing development construction resumes and business start to spend more.

Every job I ever held that was worth holding, I landed because I walked into the company I wanted to work for, asked for the Manager/Owner and offered my resume' and services. I've never answered an ad
and have been very happy about it.
