A little background, I was at a company for about a year and was laid off and took the first job that came along to avoid unemployment. I really do not like my current job for many reasons but my resume stinks because it looks like I am job hopping. Previous to that, I had long term steady employment for decades. Does anyone have any suggestions how I could make it look better so that potential employers don't say "his resume stinks!"

Thanks!

Highlight your experience from your longest term employment. I would think if you spent decades on one job that is a good thing.

People "job hop" all the time nowadays. Some employers will care and some won't.

I have a couple of short term jobs on my resume and it hasn't hindered my ability to find work.

What one person considers job hopping, others consider normal.

You can have 1-2 jobs per year for a couple years and this might seem normal. Or an average of 1 job every 14 months might be normal. Or one job for 2 years, then 8 months, then 1.5 years, then 4 years.

I leave dates off my resume. Hasn't hurt me at all. Instead I highlight how many years of experience I have overall in my field.

Do not leave off dates. It makes it look like you are hiding something. As a manager, I actually appreciate it when people did a little job hopping. You should really highlight new skills that you learned from each job.

Personally, I think you have the best of both worlds because you have a job with longevity and you also did some job hopping.

I had the same problem because my visa status made my jobs fit into contracted terms(3 months or 1 year). No exception which made leaving jobs painless but makes one look like a hopper.

I got plenty of interviews still. Lots of same day call backs after applying online.

It doesn't sound like job hopping at all. You have shown steady work on your resume, it is just the last two jobs. Your explanation of being laid off from one, easy. The next one, 'not a good fit' or 'not challenging enough' when you interview.

As someone who used to review piles of resumes, I wasn't too concerned about job hoppers in the first flush. I was much more concerned about those with a missing "three to five" span in employment, if you catch my drift.

If you are pursuing an education or at least attending night classes during the "job hopping" period, it looks better.
