Also, have you ever tried to negotiate your package?
Legal industry (small firm), 2009, 3+ years, secretarial, 3 months pay and vacation, Charlotte, NC.

I did request that my severance be paid as a regular bi-weekly salary rather than lump sum, as my husband and I had just started the process of refinancing our mortgage and I did not want the layoff to affect our ability to get a good rate if the bank called to verify employment or requested a "most recent" paystub with our paperwork. They agreed. We closed on the refinance a few weeks before my severance period ended. Once I received that last paycheck I was able to file for unemployment.

Severance package is always ALWAYS negotiable.

The company probably tells you it is not, but keep in mind that's their way of preventing you from suing them for discrimination ( why they laid you off and not the other guy).

Last job I had, they initially offered me 2 months pay, I ended up getting 4 months from them after a quick negotiation.

Always negotiate.

If you're a white guy in his mid 30's, there is no negotiations
