Do you think it would be okay to let coworkers I get along with that I'm looking for a job in the printing field? Do you think they might let it slip to the boss and it could get me fired? I work in a retail store with a high turnover rate, so I'm sure they don't expect me to stay there forever. The reason I would like to let them know is that I've had no luck in my job hunt for a few months now, and maybe they might know someone in the print business and could give me a lead.

What about strangers? Sometimes I run into the customers when I'm out who recognize me from working there. We usually start a mini-conversation about how they recognize me, how's work there, etc. Do you think I could let them know too and hope they might have a lead for me? What do you guys think?

No, I would not tell a coworker I was looking for a job. IMO the customers are just being polite and really don't care--they are just making small talk. There are not that many actual print shops still around, so I think it would be in your best interest to stop by those that do exist and speak with the guy running the shop.

Nope. I let it be a surprise. Can't really trust people in the work world.

yeah, i told a couple of coworkers that i'm friends with that i'm looking, and it got back to my boss. it wasn't a big deal, she just asked me about it and i told her the truth. i was planning on telling her soon anyway and there were no negative consequences for me, but many managers & employers will react badly to that kind of news.

so, i wouldn't tell coworkers unless you're ok with the boss finding out from someone other than you. if you know that people give long and indefinite notice at your job and aren't treated badly or let go for it, just tell your boss and then you can tell whoever you like. but otherwise i'd stay quiet about it at work with everyone.

Do not tell anyone at your job that you're seeking alternative employment, no matter how friendly you think you are with them.

Never tell anyone you are job hunting, even you BF at work. It will get slipped by someone somehow!

Since I do not work in an ultra-competitive field with backstabbing, there are a few people I would tell at my job. There are people who have told me that they were looking for a job and I didn't tell anyone else. No one tells my boss either because she's not really well-liked.

I do talk to a few people. My field is like its own planet and everyone seems to know everyone else or someone at every location. Many people have multiple jobs and letting someone know you're looking means you might have an 'in' somewhere else.

I'm not sure how retail co-workers could realistically help you find a printing job, so I don't see much upside to telling them, and the downside is big because you could lose your job.

NEVER tell anyone.....

I had a recruiter call me once and someone overheard the conversation. My CEO came in and had a talk about how long I was committed to the company for etc.

I used to tell my co-workers I was looking, and I quickly realized that was a bad idea as we were competing for almost the exact same job openings.
