I had this job 3 years ago where I wrote little 100 word or less advertisements for some website. It was only temporary (like 4-6 months). I never include it on my resume or work history on job applications because:
1.) it just doesn't seem relevant to anything, I didn't work in an office or anything
2.) I was hired as a private contractor, so I didn't even really have a "real" boss
3.) I don't remember the guy or website who hired me. All I remember was that he was an accountant and that website was a side thing he worked on.
Anyway, should I be including this in my work history when I'm filling out a job application? When employers do a background check will they see that job and think that I lied or hid something?
I genuinely don't remember any contact info from that job - no email, phone number, or name. It was so long ago and I just kinda forgot about it because it seems so irrelevant.
I wouldn't include it. On the off chance that it comes up, just pass it off as a little hustle that you had on the side.
Thanks, yeah, I have nothing to hide, but this job was truly nothing that could stand out on a resume. I just worked from my laptop and wrote some stuff. I don't include it in the work history section of job applications because they always ask for an address and phone number and like I said, I don't remember any of that.
I wouldn't include it in a resume - but if it relates at all to the positions you're applying for I might include it in an online app where it asks for 'all employment in the last 10 years'. Usually you can select if they can contact the employer or not. A lot of time the address/phone are optional info - I usually just list the town/state.
I have a few that I include because it does relate to my work, but I doubt anyone there remembers me (temporary college job) and could give an info about the work I did.
I'm just so anxious after reading a lot of the stuff on here about HR axing and blacklisting anyone who they want. I keep thinking how:
1.) my past managers probably don't remember me enough to really say anything super great about me
2.) there's one manager who didn't like me (or anyone else) and what if she does something sneaky that makes me look bad?
There is no central database of every employer that has ever paid you. It's ok to leave a couple of things off. I imagine the only real exception to this would be a government job with a high security clearance. They look pretty deep.

Ok, I was just worried that it would show up in a background check or something (I have no idea what shows up in a background check) and that it would make me look bad or something.

There are many different levels of background check. The most typical checks are criminal, credit and drug testing. Managers will also check references, which may go beyond the ones that you list. Some employers may call colleges to verify graduation.
Not everybody does all of the above, and you have to sign a permission form for the criminal, credit and drug trifecta.
I have heard rumors that some companies will request that you supply them with tax transcripts, and those would show previously declared income. I have never encountered this myself and I am sure that it is quite rare, possibly limited to the financial and legal professions.

I paid to do a background check on myself just to see what would pop up. Had a couple of side hustles and a job that I only worked at for 9 months that I left off my resume. None of that stuff showed up and have passed a really in depth background check at my last employer.
