Man, I just made a big mistake. I decided to use a "professional" online background check service to run a background check on myself and it turned out to be a complete scam. I wasted $39.95 for an instant report that simply ran a Google search on my name and compiled a bunch of supposed address and employment information about me (90% of it was other people by my same name). I got scammed big time.
How do I run the same kind of background check an employer would before hiring me?
The "Work History" portion of the background check churned up 10 people who had my first initial and last name --- none of them were even me!

Yep, but a valuable lesson. Many people do not know this but employers are also able to run those same internet data searches (although they do use specialized data brokers for that) and get the same information outside the normal "background" check. These data searches can reveal things about you that you never though were possible. Since they are not background checks, they are not required to verify the information is factual or accurate. They are also outside some privacy protections.
As for conducting a background check, pick up the yellow pages and look under private investigators and find one that offers background checking services. This way you’re dealing with a face and not some anonymous internet entity. They often charge just a bit more than what you pay online but at least they can tailor what you need. There are other companies such as US Search that seems to have a good reputation in the public, but you need to check them out for yourself.

My question is, how can I get a hold of these specialized data brokers? And what kind of information can they get?

He posted his resume and some other personal info a couple of months ago and left his name visible. It was later removed. A number of the regulars here know his name.
