This has actually happened a few times to me. I apply for a job and then notice how ever long after that someone from that company looks at my linkedin.
Do they do this for everyone who applies , specific people?
This is normal... why would they not look at this information? All information online is fair game... and people should be looking it over to ensure you are posting "crazy" (however that is defined) stuff online.
Flip side is that you SHOULD search out the person who will interview you online profiles. Be smart and don't do it under your name though...
I've used this information to make the interviewer feel more comfortable... and if there are convos after, you can hit on things that you and that person might have in common. Don't hit on five common things... that would seem creepy.
Yes!! I Google all prospects and look at the entire online footprint. Facebook, Twitter, Linked In etc.
Yes. Me too. It's all fair game. If you are responsible with your *public* online presence, you have nothing to worry about.
As for doing a LinkedIn search under your own name, I don't mind if I see that a candidate has checked out my LinkedIn. Some might find it startling, but I think it shows preparation, not some creepy curiosity. If they are being interviewed by a potential colleague, wouldn't they want to know the type of background, years of experience, education, and activities got the person there? Once hired, before a meeting with someone new, wouldn't you check the user directory to see where the person sits, who they report to, who reports to them, what business unit they're in, etc?
If you feel stalker-ish then just change the setting so that you show up as "This user chose to remain anonymous". It's a LinkedIn setting. The flip side is that also means you can't see who has checked you out.
what I was getting at was whether it could mean something as far as getting an interview.
I just didn't know if they did this for all applicants or just certain ones.
I also didn't apply through LinkedIn so they definitely tried to find me.
Gotcha. Yes, it's a good sign. As a hiring manager, I would not look up someone's LinkedIn if I wasn't curious to know more. If someone definitely wasn't a fit based on their background, I wouldn't waste my time looking them up.
However, if it's a recruiter, they could be trying to get to your contact list so be careful and make sure your contact list is only viewable to other contacts.
If a hiring manager looks and doesn't bring you in for an interview, time to beef up the LinkedIn a bit, make sure you have a professional looking photo, nothing weird in the newsfeed, no typos, make sure your resume and LinkedIn work profile (dates and company names) match exactly, etc.

No way to tell. S/he may have seen something negative and decided NOT to call you.
Hopefully they will, though.
