You can either address that in your cover letter or add it to the resume. Many people add the reason they were terminated from a previous job, such as, "Position was eliminated due to downsizing".

I got the job where I am now after being self-employed for 17 years, as 1993-Current." On the resume I listed experience gained at the business that was relevant to the position as well as from a previous job. During the interviews I was never asked whether I was going to keep the business, close it or sell it. At the time it was closed but I have kept a few good customers and do work for them on the side still, 5 years later. After accepting the offer HR did put me in touch with one of their lawyers to make me aware that I could not do business with companies that I was now working with for them, due to possible conflict of interest.

OMG you're reply is EXACTLY what I needed! I am deeply grateful you caught my post and replied. Thank You
I've been self-employed for 26 years and the process of going back into the work force is both exciting and daunting. I haven't closed my business yet, but had planned to when I move. Technically I could still keep it open and like yourself, state on my resume 1988-Current. And if the question comes up in the interview whether or not I plan to keep the business or close it, I'll address it then.
I've read a lot of negative articles re: our situation, and it's got me extremely worried. The one thing I've read over and over is that many companies do *not* like people that are self-employed because their concern is that such a person would not be able to work under someone else. And often times a self-employed applicant will not get an interview, even though he/she may be qualified. I know I can't allow this to scare me, and all I can do is forge forward. If you don't mind me asking, how long did it take you to get a job?

When my commercial lease was up I moved to the house in February 2008 and tried to make a go of it alone, then I finally started to apply for jobs in July 2008. I only applied for jobs that paid enough to make the house payment with one check a month, and that were related to either what I did before or the business, or both. I ended up having two interviews without being selected, both times the HR person told me I had been a close 2nd. The interview for the job I ended up with was in February 2009. I went back for a 2nd interview, they made the offer, then checked references and background, and I started in late May. So it was about 10 months from starting to look to starting the job. Finding openings with the combination of skills from the business and the previous career was difficult, and took a lot of thought, then checking a limited number of specific websites daily. With my management experience it would seem to translate to other industries but in those days, even more than now, they can find plenty of others with experience in that exact kind of work.

That was quite a process you went through, and a lengthy one at that. I plan to go into a totally different field than what I'm in now. I also know that if that does not pan out, just getting a job will have to suffice. Survival. I truly appreciate you taking the time to help me and share your experience. My deepest gratitude.
