A lot of smaller companies don't ask for references and/or don't check them. If you don't have good references or relationships with past employers they can be a good place to look.
I do have some references, but they aren't "high-ranking" people by any means. One of them is a guy I used to paint for during summers in college when he'd recruit college students for his painting company. Another one is a friend who sells cars.
The past 5 years I've worked for a small web design company (only 7 employees) handling the graphic design of websites they created.
Recently, the owner of the company and I had some creative disagreements and decided to go our separate ways. It was a long time coming. He is my only solid business reference unless we go back to various odd jobs I held in college or shortly thereafter. That leaves me in a tough position.
I have a solid portfolio of work I've done, but this industry can be very "chummy", so I'm looking to branch out into other industries and would like a change. I majored in a liberal arts field with not much employability behind it, since it's so common. Then I got the graphic design certifications on my own and for the most part am self-taught.
It seems like not having a minimum 3 or 4 solid business references can be very detrimental, but for a younger person it's not always possible as my situation shows.
I believe it's always good to have a previous supervisor as a reference. I always wanted all my references to be previous supervisors which to me were the best ones to have.

Resumes are not becoming a thing of the past since I have not seen on job ad request a linkedin profile instead of a resume.
