Nobody's forcing anyone to do anything.

Why don't you learn Spanish then? If you're highly-educated, it shouldn't be that hard.

As a Hispanic person, I can totally understand why it's insulting to those folks who only speak English. Many Hispanic immigrants never even bother to learn a word of English anyway. In my city, some Hispanics have lived here for decades, and STILL don't speak a word of English.

I think it's totally wrong that people should have to learn Spanish just to be considered for a job, especially if they otherwise have no need to use Spanish in their everyday lives.

But that's what the job requires!

Why should I be required to learn the SQL programming language just to be considered for a job, if I have no need to use it in my everyday life??

That's what a job is! If jobs didn't involve people doing things that they don't do in their everyday lives, you wouldn't have to pay people to do them!

I can understand your frustration. I get annoyed that some people here cant speak English and get mad at me if I dont speak to them in Spanish. (Im bilingual so I speak Spanish fluently). If you work in the US you should be required to speak English.. BUT Nothing wrong with learning a new language and bettering yourself. It can help you find better paying jobs as well!! IMO, it looks great on a resume too

Because it takes years and years to obtain a decent fluency level, that level in which may or may not be enough for a specific position.

Many times though, the language requirement is used as a tool to discriminate, which the US gov calls "language discrimination", however, the US gov has been concentrating more on those with an English requirement than those with a foreign language requirement.

Well, there are plenty of jobs that I'm not qualified to do without years of training, and you don't hear me whining about it.

This is true... I am only fluent because when I was younger, my grandparent who only spoke Spanish took care of me so they'd speak to me in Spanish. Even now theres still a few words I dont know.. Any new language is very complex.

If companies were just to make a profit, then you would never have any discrimination cases as the best person for the job would get hired, but fact is, companies are ran by people, and people love inputting their bias and poor decisions when running the company.

Language, any language including English, can be used as a tool for discrimination.
