I wasn't able to land an offer for the graduate scheme type programs so I am going to be applying for positions through internet job boards. However, I won't be graduating until May.
When should I start applying to get consideration? I feel that if I apply now, it automatically goes to the rejection pile since I'm not immediately available.
What is your field? Different fields have different conventions. Government work, for example, is notorious for its slow hiring process.
In the absence of more information, 3-4 months before your availability date seems like a good rule of thumb. You may find yourself having to turn down an offer or two where they wanted you to start earlier than you are able, but it's not the least bit uncommon for a job search to take that long or longer even without complications related to availability
I don't know about MBAs, but when I was in engineering college, most students were securing positions 3-9 months before graduation. In my case, I started interviewing about 7 months before graduation and accepted a job offer about a month later.
The earlier you start applying, the more job opportunities you will have a chance to consider; If you don't get an offer now, you may get one next month. It also gives you more time to practice interviewing and to "feel out" what hiring managers are looking for. That way you don't have to waste time doing this after graduation.
