I had the weirdest interview yesterday. This was for a pretty good position but not Too amazing. They wanted 5+ years experience and a bachelors degree minimum. Here is some of the odd questions.
-what year do you graduate high school?
-what extra curricular activities were you involved in in high school and college?
-did you work in college? Why did you leave off your resume this minimum wage job at a homeless battered women's shelter? What are you trying to hide?
-why did it take you five years to get a bachelors degree (I worked full time a year and took off)
-do you have a family to support or just you?
-how outgoing are you? This is the characteristic all our workers must have! It's a must! (Position is for a business analyst, not sales or anything)
Needless to say I didn't answer many of these questions to their liking. I graduated high school in the late 90s and college in the early 2000s so those questions threw me off. I got a decline email an hour later lol. I wouldn't have went to another interview if they asked me.
Some of those questions are totally inappropriate the rest have the tone of an @hole interviewer trying to tear others apart for whatever reason to either make themself feel better or because they are of the delusion doing so is doing a service to the company when in fact they are acting like a sociopath.

They were focused on "age". The tone was negative. I would have answered the questions with a question like the one "why it took you so long to finish ..." with "is there a set limit when someone is supposed to finish....?" /wow/ there are some real obnoxious scheits out there.
I could tell hey we're really focused on age but I'm not sure what asking about high school and college does. The interview was with hr only. It sucks that such a moron is the gate keeper.
asking for hs and college graduation dates is an indirect way of asking age. They don't feel comfortable asking directly "how old are you" so they ask about dates. Some of us over 40 have removed graduation dates from resumes for this exact reason.

How would you answer if asked though? I was honest and I'm not too far from 40 so I was probably too old. My resume showed over ten years of professional experience though so my age was no secret and they still interviewed me.

I totally agree. I thought it was against the law to ask someone's age, whether direct or indirect.
To the OP: You should be happy they turned you down. Can you imagine working for this place? Nit picky, nosey micro-managers.
