I am applying for jobs and checking out their cultures on sites like Glassdoor and "thelayoff.com". Is anyone familiar with that site? It's basically a place where people talk about rumors of layoffs and vent a bit. I was told to avoid applying to companies listed on thelayoff.com and I was wondering if there's any truth to this?

You cannot depend on anything as 100% reliable. When I was hired in 2009, there were layoffs about 3 weeks later. They were done not by seniority, but by eliminating non-essential functions. My department was spared, and I have gotten two promotions since. Companies like Microsoft and Boeing have rumors and actual layoffs all the time, yet continue to hire new people. It's a matter of changing needs, or getting fresh blood.

You need to take everything with a grain of salt. This apply to both Glassdoor.com and TheLayoff.com - Both companies have all companies operating in the USA listed on their sites, therefore both companies that have no issues and companies with issues will have comments.

I like to review comments on both, compare this to the media, PR, etc. Once you add everything up you should have a better idea about what's going on. For example, you may see that some companies have 1000s of posts on thelayoff.com, that's a bad sign, but if you look up Google or Facebook on that site you will notice only a handful of messages. This tells you something.

Also, when it comes to Glassdoor.com I think their rating score is fairly accurate, I've worked for 3 fortune 500 companies over last 15+ years and I'd say that the score listed on this site is fairly accurate (or in line with my own experiences)...

Good luck!!!
