Have been trying to help my son get employment as an electrical apprentice for months. Both my son and I are very discouraged. Most want 2-3 years experience (he's a new grad). One briefly hired him for 2 days a week, this lasted about 2 weeks till they said they didn't have any more work at this time. He's had a couple of interviews, they never called back. The past week was a real winner .... they asked for an interview, he arrives, things seem to go well. They ask him what he wants per hour and he says $12. The guy says Well I'm not comfortable with that, how about we make it $15? My son is happy, interviewer says we'll send you an Email this Saturday if we decide to hire you. They sent an Email saying they aren't going to hire him because they needed to have an E2 in order to hire him, and the one they were going to hire didn't work out.

So now I see one of the jobs he tried for about 5 months ago is hiring again .....

Meanwhile we have people hyping the trades as if one can get an entry level trades job without experience.

They're out of touch.

My state always says how they need electricians. I think they ought to put out an ad meeting truth in advertising ... we need electricians who have their E2 license, lots of tools, ect. Of course, no one comes out of a technical education with an E2 license.

Precisely. But you'll see six tons of schools wanting to sell their electrician training but no way to get the E2.

Well that's one thing to thank God for. We didn't pay for the education.

If your son wants to be an electrician (going off of the original post)... and there's jobs for electricians that simply need an E2... why not just get certified and get the E2? That seems like the correct path to employment.

You must be hired by an already licensed electrician who is willing to keep track of your hours. You must accumulate 4000 hours of work to obtain an E2. You must then pass a licensing test.

As another poster mentioned, trade schools produce graduates in the exact position as my son is.
