I am currently looking for a new position due to required travel for my current. I am in high demand and my field doesn't have large national well know employers like many fields, so it's hard to know the reputations of these smaller companies. Right now I have so much interest and companies wanting to interview me its become overwhelming. I don't have time to go on all these interviews, but I want to choose the best option for me. But I have no way to differentiate the companies.
When I was unemployed years ago and job hunting, I prepared a “short list” of companies I wanted to work for. I spent my days (and often, nights) researching (mostly on the internet and contacting my network) these companies. What are their products/services? How is the reported working environment? Are the qualifications of their current employees similar to mine?
Based on my findings, I could select the companies I wanted to focus/target my job search towards.
And, when you do land an interview at these companies, the prospective employer will be impressed at your knowledge of their company.
I guess it depends on the kind of job you are looking and the urgency of hiring at the employer side. If you are looking for a job at a local business then there are some job board sites that claim to have local businesses jobs posting where you just need to reach out to employer directly. like one I found jobsatbusinesses.com.

I second this information. The OP is lucky in the fact they can be choosy. Most are grateful to get a handful of interviews.
