If you're not familiar, the AMCHA Initiative is like the ADL for college campuses, and while I don't agree with all of their viewpoints, I think they are an important voice.

https://amchainitiative.org/

All by way of saying I had a troubling class this week when it became painfully obvious that my English lit teacher is over the top anti-Israel/pro-Palestinian.

Even though my viewpoints align with J Street org (and I also still buy Ben and Jerry's ice cream), this teacher made me feel really uncomfortable when we were discussing two novels written by Palestinian authors. Unfortunately he talked more about how destructive Israel has been since 1948, than he did about the writing (which was superb), so I mostly stayed quiet.

In his weekly assessment of my class participation later, he asked me if I was having a bad week....

Anyway, this doesn't come under the purview of the AMCHA Initiative, but I think it's a worthy organization people should know about.

PS. Can some kind Mod fix the spelling in the title please?

No problem.

That teacher sounds like a problem, though. He knows he's in a position of power (having the final say over your grades in his class) and his "innocently" asking you whether you were "having a bad week" seems rather falsely ingenuous, to me. Perhaps even a bit taunting.

I don't really think you should have to put up with that, but I wouldn't attempt to confront him because of the fact that he's in a position of power over you, his student. I would take the matter to those on your campus who have experience dealing with stuff like this.

There is a reason why you felt that class was "troubling" and why you found yourself going "quiet" in that class. Trust your instincts.

Thanks for the support, Rachel, I really appreciate it. It was interesting because another woman in the class that I am becoming good friends with, texted me later asking me if that class was hard on me, so she noticed it, too. I’ll have to think about it.

We need to support each other more than ever, these days. There may be darker days ahead.
