Cities like Omaha, Memphis, Milwaukee, Boise all have Zip Car service but St Louis nor KC has anything. Wonder what the deal is?

Best locations for Zip Car spots

1. RiverMart
2. Crossroads
3. Westport (West of SW Trafficway)
4. 39th Street Area/KU Med
5. UMKC like 51st and Oak
6. Rockhurst Campus
7. Brookside/Waldo
8. Penn Valley Campus

I would use is absolutely were it here, but I work in an office of 110 people and I'm the only one who takes the bus currently. The ideal thing about Zip car is that it's everywhere you'd need to really go -- I'm just not sure they could make it convenient enough while still controlling costs in a city as spread out as Kansas City is.

Very simple answer: No demand

In KC, if I only need a car once or twice a month, it's cheaper to rent one from Enterprise or Thrifty.

Here, if I need a car 5-10 times a month, it's cheaper to buy an inexpensive car, carry liability insurance on it, and find a free place to park it when I don't need it.

If you can't afford the above options, you probably can't afford a Zip membership either.

Also, public transportation in KC is not great. KC is a car-driving town. So few people rely on public transit for their every-day all-inclusive transportation needs. Even if you use the bus to get to and from work, you likely still use a car on weekends and regularly for your other about-town needs.

KC will be one of the last places for Zip to set up shop. Sorry.

Los Angeles, Atlanta and Miami all have Zip Car and they are more spread out then KC. But you are right the cities that are spreading out like crazy; Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio, OKC, all do not have zip car service

How do you know there is no demand?
Did you survey people who do not have a car and if they would use the service?
How many people would get rid of there existing cars to get zipcar if that meant no insurance costs, no gas costs and general wear and tear like oil changes if this service was started?

I think Samantha is right on this one. Obviously I haven't done a full study of it, but from what I have seen in the year I've been here, even in the very heart -- the most dense -- part of this town -- people are still very reliant on their cars. I doubt very highly they'd be apt to give them up.

A girl I work with -- she's very nice this is no insult to her -- lives 2 blocks from work and drives anyway.

St. Louis does have this service. It's called WeCar and is operated by Enterprise. Very popular with the University students and folks who just chose to live without a car.

You learn something new every day.

Where are the locations though? On a really quick look over their Web site I didn't see a list ...

No, I did a quick analysis of the cost-effectiveness of zip-car vs owning an inexpensive car in KC and it was a no-brainer.
