Hi,
I was wondering if anyone can provid me with helpful information. We are looking to move our family to Kansas to be near family that has recently moved there. I am a certified medical biller and my husband owns his own business in the auto industry. I was wondering how the economy is there and job potental. We would be looking at next summer to do this. What about the economy there I have heard it's in pretty good shape also the housing market. Any information to enlighten me would be apprciated. Thank you...

Unemployment is well below the national average.

Housing market is pretty loose, lots of deals out there due to overbuilding and you can find pretty much anything from semi-urban older homes to new construction with cows mooing next door. It never got that crazy here one way or the other.

Traffic is generally light vs. comparable metro areas. etc etc.

Check out realtor.com if you want to eyeball housing. Consider other nearby towns like Lenexa, Shawnee, Olathe too.

Not knowing where you are moving from or more aobut your family situation gives me pause to mention more.

Good luck.

Default Looking to Move from Rochester Hills MI to Kansas

We are moving from Rochester Hills Michigan. My husband has owned his own buisness in auto for 16 plus years and we no longer are willing to wait to see if this industry here will increase. I have two siblings that have just moved to Overland Park and Olathe but they are still trying to get use to the area and have some insight but not a lot. Like I said I am in the medical field so from what I hear Kansas has a lot of medical there. I hear the schools are blue ribbon schools so that is important as we have a 9 year old and a 12 year old.

The schools are awesome. I would opt for Blue Valley over Olathe, but Olathe doesn't like to be outdone by BV (especially on the bordering East side) so they are also quite good.

There is more wealth in BV dsitrict, Olathe is more socio-economically diverse. There are advantages and disadvantages to these things, so this is only meant to inform, not to judge that one is inherently better.

In terms of general real estate desirability Olathe << Overland Park << Leawood.

Again, I am speaking generally (people get really bunched up around here when you start talking about these things and comparing.) Olathe has some very nice neighborhoods and schools. In general though, the exact same house will cost more in Overland Park by about 10% and will bump by about 20% in Leawood. They just do. You have to decide for yourself if it's worth it to you.

We moved in 2009 from Shawnee (which is also a nice area, West of I435 and Johnson Drive) close to the area you are considering. Schools were the top priority. (Not because the schools were bad where we lived (DeSoto District) they weren't, but because I believed they would be better in BV. Thus far, I have been blown away and in retrospect, I wish we had moved years ago.

We opted to pay more for a house than we had to, on the assumption that it would be worth comparatively more later on when our kids are out of school and we downsize. Again, something you have to decide for yourself based on your own circumstances and plans for the future.

In short though, it's a GREAT place to raise kids. Job market is doing relatively well and there are some great deals on housing out there.

Best of luck to you!! And Welcome!!

Thank you so much. I really appricate the information. I have a sibling in each area, one where you use to live and one in the BV area. I my sister in law can not say enough about BV so that is great. I know my family has been consistant at us moving from Michigan there. We have a little time so that is why I thought the more information the better. Now it's getting a hold of a head hunter for employement. I am a certified medical biller with over 20 years in the field so I hope I can make a good transition from one state to another. Of course I will more than likley do this in the spring as the market is usually pretty tough this time of year.

Yeah there are a number of major health providers in the area so run some searches....maybe look at monster.com too?

I would caution that the traffic in some of the southern parts can get a bit messier than others depending upon if you commute etc. so be alert to that. (But it's not that bad relative to other metro areas).

Best of luck with your move.

Let's not get carried away. The unemployment rate is "slightly" better than the national average for the metro as a whole. The booming 90s were over a LONG time ago.

I'd call that "well below" ...
(See if you can pull up those 90s numbers, probably in the 1.5-3% range)
Ahem, I did say the "metro as a whole." The U-6 figure, which is a more accurate representation continues to be in the 13-15% range. Also, Jackson County, MO still has a greater amount of total employment than Johnson County.
Of course, JOCO will have a lower rate due it being a corporate employment hub for the entire metro as well as having some of the highest educated worforce closeby.
You also have a fairly sizable percentage of the population that is self employed. However, being self employed is tougher when the economy as a whole is not performing well. That is certainly still the case around the US.
I am thankful I didn't find a good position in my career field in GIS and planning realm in KC because I really needed a change of scenery after 20+ years there. At least my career change is one that is growing, though.
