Mean people stink!

Thieves peel copper from columns in KC park | News Tribune

Police say about 30 to 40 percent of the copper has disappeared from Kessler Park during the past few weeks.

The copper was installed in November 2004 during work to restore the colonnade, which is more than 100 years old.

Default Copper thieves

That's too bad and hopefully they can find were they try to sell it. Another type of metal that's less desirable may be needed in the future.

Why don't they just use tile, you could do some really funky and cool colors to make it stick out too

Generally these renovations attempt to keep historical accuracy to structures. Under normal conditions as a roofing material copper lasts a very long time, much longer than tile.

What is the scrap value of that? Doesn't seem worth it.

In 2008 we reached highs of about $5/lb and we are just about there again. People are getting desperate and theives care not as they don't have a dime in it. Much easier to steal and deface public property than to be a productive member of society.

Copper can be quote lucrative as MoGal stated and as such is often a target for thieves. Many made a killing during the foreclosure crisis.

Copper is stolen all the time. People break into houses and steal copper pipping. A friend of mine bought a house in downtown KC as an inventment property and he had the copper stolen out of his basement 6 times.

That is insane. Most folks are using PEX these days just because copper pipes are so expensive. It is not unusual for those facing foreclosure to strip the house of copper plumbing, fixtures etc... .
