Quality varies greatly. Some of the most famous, old-school places don't have the high quality they perhaps once did. But there is some wonderful Italian food on the hill, without a doubt.

Nope. Do I need to quote myself from a conversation where this topic came up before? For its size, KC is a very foodie town, whereas St. Louis (though it's improved enormously in this regard in recent years), is still.. not.

Ok, I'll do it:

And it looks like the first year any were nominated was 2009.

Oh no you didn't bring up the lack of James Beard awards St. Louis chefs have.
That actually means nothing in terms of Kansas City having a better food scene than St. Louis. Lil Wayne has 4 Grammy awards, but does that make him a great musical artist...NOPE!

Well it's not too relevant for someone looking for sommelier work, but ...

And if you still feel like reading, I always recommend this 2006 NYT article about St. Louis from their "36 hours in ..." series

KC is behind on good quality food carts but it's coming, there is an organic food cart that just opened up, a meatball food cart is in the works, and a southwest style concept coming as well

KC has a 36 hours new york times piece as well, The U.S. Issue - 36 Hours in Kansas City, Mo. - NYTimes.com
