Comparing the two photos they really added on to the second story in the back. They also got rid of that big smoke stack, which probably meant the place was coal fired and they converted to gas. I am wondering if the upstairs was apartments.

In neither 1952 nor 1960 does SSK show something upstairs. I presume it was either vacant or part of the store's operations, perhaps it offices. Was there a basement in that store, I'm sure there was.

I think you are right about a basement. Here is a side view looking west from Lynn Street.

The building currently houses The Emporium. I have never paid any attention to what that might be.

SSK took up almost that whole side to Lynn. In 1952 only the Reiff Cleaners was on that side, at 155 E Maple. By 1960 115 was occupied by Ted L Shoush Co., Inc. storm windows and awnings. SHOCO

The bus depot went away by 1960 and alot of businesses took over the 100 block of EL . .all the way to 151 Davidow's Furn Outlet

Maple at one time went all the way to Noland. Darned if I can remember anything past Lynn Street, although Snow Meat was for years on the northeast corner of Lynn and Maple.

City Hall straddled the middle of Maple closing it off. Maps show one block of Maple from Memorial Drive to Noland but there is no access to Noland.

Actually 1952 shows it going all the way to Dodgion. Four houses in the 200 block.

1960 shows Dodgion also. Five houses in the 200s, plus Davidow's warehouse

Both years have Independence Animal Hospital Automotive Supply Col and assorted other businesses.

1960 has H&R Block

Seem's to me that next to Snow was Automotive Supply(NAPA), Thompson Auto Parts was East of them on North side of street as well , and across street from Thompson Auto Parts was U.S. Supply. U.S. Supply later moved to 35th st, just West of Noland road. This was about 1960 or so. It is still there, but has been bought out by Ferguson.

Now that you two gentlemen mentioned those places on east Maple Street I can recall their names. But if you had not mentioned them, I probably would never have remembered them, chuckle.

But I do remember very vividly the west facing Mo-12 highway sign on the Kresge side of Maple at Lynn that said "12 ends."

I do not recall this one. But it looks as though this may be all Oregon.
