I am moving to KC in a couple of weeks for a new job at Truman Medical Center. Relocating from Dallas Tx. I've been watching the boards for a while. I did see a recent topic that talked about Longfellow neighborhood having more of an east coast feel. Any input on the area near Holmes and 26th street? I am thinking of living there in a duplex. Originally I was going to stay in River market area but after consideration and looking around I will be paying half as much rent for an eqiuvlent amount of space (river market rent ~1050/month). I am a single male from inner city part of Dallas. My biggest concern is someone kicking down my door when I'm not home. The duplex on Holmes is close to job which is good. I value the cheaper cost of rent over the "trendy" river market. No way am I bashing the river market area, it is great just wouldn't be the best finanical move at this point. Any thoughts/feedback about the Holmes & 26th street area of Longfellow? Thanks in advance

Yeah, 26th/Holmes is doable. Succotash is right there, great weekend brunch place I go to often. I know a few people who live in the area who have no breakin issues, but gets a little iffy the further E you go. As anywhere in any city, car breakins can happen if you leave stuff in car.

If you want newer (or newly refurbished) apts, also check a few blocks further S and W along Gilham, which is Union Hill and Martini Corner area. A lot of young professionals live there. Down to 31st/Gilham.

If you're used to urban living, I think you'll be fine. Violent crime in that area is fairly rare -- though I can't speak specifically to home break-ins.

Also, if you don't mind a vintage apartment there are plenty of large apartments for far cheaper than downtown prices in other neighborhoods as well. We live in Volker near KU Med in a 1200 sq/ft apt and we pay $600/month. My point being, if you're comfy in Longfellow, go for it. But if you're questioning it there are definitely other options.

Let us know if you have other questions!

Also, as I suggest to anyone moving into the City, you may want to look at living along the Orange MAX bus line as it gets you to a lot of city activity. TMC is about a 5-10 minute walk E of the Crown Center MAX stop... MAX has bike racks so you could bike up the hill too from the CC stop.

And the best part is 26th & Holmes ir right on top of the Green Line Troost Max stop for a short ride downtown!

26th and Holmes is great, there are new home owners in the area (I know a couple hallmark workers who bought homes here) and their is a great cafe called You Say Tomato. The best thing about living here is you can walk to work, it cannot get much better then that.

I think Longfellow is one of the most overlooked neighborhoods in KC. With three great little cafes (Succotash, You Say Tomato, Cafe Seed) moving in fairly recently, I think people are starting pay more attention to this hood.

I'm not so sure I would say it has an east coast feel. If you want that, I would recommend checking out Columbus Park - to me definitely the most "east coast feeling" neighborhood in KC. Although, since you are coming from Dallas, Longfellow will probably seem more east coast (more urban, older building stock) compared to Texas.

Columbus Park and some of the Old Northeast Area have a real east coast feel to it
