My husband started with Cerner in February and for the last two months (and foreseeable future) his team has been averaging 55hrs a week. He had to go in this morning, too, (8am on a Sunday for at least 5hrs). I am not impressed. He has worked at two other reputable IT companies prior to Cerner and additional hours were the rare exception, not the norm. The company was not forthcoming about this schedule when he was hired, so what we considered a competitive salary at the time now seems like a joke. We have two young children and he has to leave for work before they wake up in the morning and usually gets home about an hour before bedtime. If you are single you may not mind, but if you have a family (or want a life outside of work) I would caution you against Cerner. Decent pay and good benefits don't make up for being worked to death.

This is why we need white collar unions. TO combat the idea that work is something one should be passionate about regardless of the long hours, because we are changing the world!

What type of department, software development, operations support? Cerner is well known for long hours, but it all depends on department.

I used to work at Cerner. Great place with great benefits...can't go wrong with that Associate Stock Purchase Plan! Unless you don't like getting rich quick.
