About time!.

An end to tow truck price gouging is in sight - KansasCity.com (http://www.kansascity.com/2012/04/09/3545981/an-end-to-tow-truck-price-gouging.html - broken link)

City officials have heard plenty of horror stories: A car breaks down on the highway and four different tow truck companies show up along with the police. The car gets towed to one of the company’s lots and the driver comes to retrieve it the next day — only to be hit with a $900 tow bill, plus a $200-per-day storage fee.

“It’s just astronomical,” said Gary Majors, manager of Kansas City’s regulated industries. “In those instances, what we tell the people right now is, ‘I’m sorry. We don’t regulate that.’”

But changes are coming.

The City Council recently approved a new approach that regulators say should finally reduce wreck-chasing and price-gouging when it is fully implemented later this year.

I'm glad I know a tow truck driver and pay practically nothing.

Who wouldnt get a quote before allowing someone to tow your car and if there were four of them there, why not let them bid for the job and get the lowest price? If you dont get the price beforehand and just let someone take your car, you deserve to be price gouged.

Is this why I see multiple broken down cars on the side of the freeway, every day? Are owners aware of this and then just abandon their car because well, it would cost more to tow than the car is worth?

What about those that are just confused. Should they get gouged as well? Such as tourists from another country and have trouble with the language.Such as an elderly person that is just upset and a little hard of hearing or the scam diver that get's over by saying we will take care of you.

Kinda of like the guy that put's his arm around you and says "Don't worry".
ACTUALLY HE IS JUST FEELING FOR A SOFT SPOT TO SLIP THE KNIFE INTO!

People need to be responsible and take precautions. Yes, I understand about those that do not speak the language but everyone else needs to get a price before getting a service provided for you.

I agree with you. Get a price first. I do think the regs were needed.

No disagreement on the regs. I just wish people would be more responsible consumers and protect themselves.
