KC area needs better economic cooperation, Nixon says - KansasCity.com (http://www.kansascity.com/2012/04/30/3585695/kc-area-needs-better-economic.html - broken link)

Kansas has no interest in working with Missouri to end the corporate welfare economic border war. Missouri forced to take aggressive action says MO gov Nixon.

Quote:
In March, the Missouri House passed legislation aimed at ending the “economic border war” in the Kansas City area between the Show-Me State and the Sunflower State. The bill would prohibit Missouri from issuing certain economic development tax credits to attract jobs from Kansas, but only if Kansas agreed to a similar prohibition.
Quote:
“The key is to find ways to team up to think of Kansas City as a region,” Nixon said. “I don’t see this as a bidding war between two states. I see it as an opportunity to work together to enhance the growth of the region. I don’t see it as a zero sum game. I see us working together.”

Leaders in the Kansas Senate initially were intrigued by the Missouri proposal, but Kansas House Speaker Mike O’Neal told The Associated Press there was no interest in passing a similar bill.

Why work with MO when the KS suburbs can free ride off KCMO all day long? Outside of the earnings tax, KS residents get to enjoy all the benefits of living in a large metro area while MO residents absorb all the cost.

What I find interesting is the hypocrisy of the conservative politicians in Kansas. Most of them think it is immoral for the government to use a single dollar of taxpayer funds to help out a poor person, but they will happily give away millions of taxpayer dollars to corporations as long as they get their kickback in the form of a campaign contribution and/or other assorted graft.

I personally make it a point not to do business with any of these grifter corporations that are fleecing the taxpayers.
