I'll be in KC for a couple days starting tomorrow morning...

I'll be busy with business til the afternoons... So my free time is limited to the later afternoon and evenings. But I would like to know the best restaurants, landmarks, and cool bars to visit. Especially a place to watch the NBA finals Tuesday.

I always like to get a feel for the local community when i visit new places... Not just the touristy stuff.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Everyone seems to like the Country Club Plaza, midtown, about 47th and Main. For downtown KC, the Power and Light District. Others can add more details but if you have time, go to the websites where you can click thru and get a feel for what appeals to you the most. The two areas are a few miles apart so you might be able to catch both places depending on where you'll be conducting your business. Everything's up to date in Kansas City !

Based on your posts and sports interests, you might like with The Plaza (W47th), Westport (W40th) and maybe Power and Light district (14th St downtown). There are other hoods if you want something altie/off beaten path - otherwise also check out Union Station/Freighthouse restaurants (Pierponts, Jack Stack BBQ, Lidia's Italy). Check out Manifesto/Reiger for an old KC underground experience but be prepared for $11+ drinks. Bluestem (W Westport) lounge happy hour if up for more upscale James Beard category tapas/small plates - well drinks only $3. If into single malts, check out Harry's in Westport - one of oldest buildings in KC. If into beer, tour Boulevard Brewery SW side of downtown if you get a chance. If into ethnic eats, Westport, W39th, Crossroads and City Market are best bets. Also check Yelp if you have a smartphone - for the most part, is an OK guide for places to go.

Here's a city guide of the Main St corridor...

Check out this thread for a good starting point:
//www.city-data.com/forum/kansa...city-lots.html

The Plaza is definitely worth checking out.

The Power and Light District is a bit touristy and not authentic KC - but it may have some good options for catching a game at a bar.

I would recommend Westport in Midtown for a more "local community" bar district instead. The Foundry might be a good place to watch the finals. Not a sports bar, but plenty of TVs, fantastic beer selection, and good food.

Are there any specific types of restaurants you're looking for? In general, the best districts for local restaurants, in my opinion, would be the Crossroads, Westport, and 39th St. West.

There definitely seems to be a theme here...

Thank you all for the suggestions! The downtown Power and Light District is where I will be heading tonight...

I'll plan to go here tomorrow to check out the game.

A nice steakhouse... Not too upscale but still nice. In the 3-4 star range... and something unique to the city or region.

Many will disagree with me but the best place to get a very good steak is not a self-proclaimed steakhouse that moves a hundred steaks a night. Many of those places are not at all particular on quality and tend to be very salty. But if you are not particular (and I tend to be too particular), go to most any "KC" steakhouse and you'll be good. Some upper end but not too pricey places I suggest otherwise are Pierponts in Union Station and Majestic Steakhouse downtown at around 10th/Broadway (afterwards check out The Phoenix for more KC blues/jazz a couple blocks away at 8th, E of Bway) - maybe better to do this instead of P&L, but at least check out P&L. Most any 'KC dining' place not called a steakhouse will be selective about getting a good cut and is more likely to be 'local' meat but sounds like you'd rather have more casual. There are a few KC Bar and Grill places like McCoy's in Westport that have a decent steak, where they actually make an effort to select a good grade.

edit: BTW, another true "KC" bar to check out is 'The Cigar Box' at about 15th/Grand - not sure how the steaks are but good hangout for drinks. Anthony Bordain did an entire KC show recently and loved that place. His favorite BBQ places were OK Joes, Woodyard and LCs, which I tend to agree with. Jack Stack by Union Station is doable too, but there's just something wrong about BBQ that formalized in a large dining space - cool freighthouse building though.

Well, my recommendation was to NOT go to the P&L, but maybe you'll like it.

I would say that the two long-standing, premier steakhouses in KC are the Golden Ox and the Plaza III - but those are probably more upscale and pricy than you're looking for. Xeno made some good suggestions. Also, Fiorella's Jack Stack, in addition to BBQ, also has pretty good steaks.

I ended up at the Foundry last night... I actually just drove around the entire city last night to check it out but that's where I ate. I drove through P&L but didnt stop. Checked out a casino. I liked the Plaza the best. But P&L seemed liked a good place to check out especially for the game. So I'll probably start at the Plaza today and then go to P&L later on.

I drove by the stadiums too... very nice! I hope the Royals are playing next time I visit.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't the P&L district be more like a food court during the week, especially during the day? I think it can be a great entertainment district on weekends etc, but I would think it wouldn't be too impressive to a first time visitor to KC any other time.

I could be wrong though .
