New York City is in New York
Jersey City is in New Jersey
Oklahoma City is in Oklahoma...

I know there's a Kansas City in KS, part of the same metropolitan area... But I'm trying to figure out why is there a city named Kansas City in the State of Missouri? Shouldn't it be Missouri City?

Please guys don't get me wrong, sorry if it may sounds like a joke, but it's not. I'm just curious to know about the city name origin.

There is a Missouri City not far from Kansas City. Here is some Kansas City history and the evolution of the name.

History of the Kansas City metropolitan area - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Used to be "City of Kansas." Hey, Kansas City is better than "Possum Trot," which was a name that was suggested at one point.

Thanks for the link!!!

KC has an interesting history!!!!

And I researched about the Missouri City... It has only over 267 people lol... Should've be better if they give the name to the largest city in the state, right? It would sounds cooler than Kansas City, and people wouldn't be asking questions like this haha.

You have to think of Kansas as a territory and not the state. Lots of things were named after the Kansa Indian Tribe. The Kansas River, The Town of Kansas (which is now KCMO) etc.

The Town of Kansas, and later Kansas City, MO, was established before the state of Kansas was established. The city was named after Kansa Indians, just as the state of Kansas was.

Yes, lots of controversy with a city in Missouri being called "Kansas City". Especially, when its neighboring state is called Kansas.

I posted a thread about this matter: //www.city-data.com/forum/kansa...i-anymore.html

I actually hate that post, because it is so poorly written, and, a bit naive. But, it does elaborate some issues in which many Missourians do feel about having their city named (not after) but likewise with their rivaling and neighboring state.

Kansas City was incorporated before there was a state of Kansas. Kansas City was named after the Kansas Indians, Kansas City, Missouri was first then there was a Kansas.

Did Kansas City exist before Kansas Territory?

Yes.

Kansas Territory was officially established by the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. Before that it was called "Indian Country".

And when was the Town of Kansas established? That was the first name of what's become Kansas City, MO, right?
