My husband and I (he is Indian and I am Caucasian) are considering a move back to the Midwest. I am from there, southwest Missouri to be exact. We have a three year old son and to be honest, we are quite concerned about racism. We're looking more at Overland Park than any other area, but the schools, with the exception of 1 or 2, appear to have very heavily skewed demographics towards white. Can anyone that sends their children to school in Overland Park, please provide a more realistic view of your specific school system and the current state of racism incurred in that area? How does the school administration deal with bullying, acceptance, racism, etc.? Are our fears warranted or is OP an anomaly to the midwest generalization?

I grew up in Missouri and even I experienced the first-hand hatred just because I had moved from California. That's been 3 decades ago, though, and that was a very small town with a KKK compound right outside the city so my perspective of the midwest may be serious skewed. Any help would be greatly appreciated because I really do want to move closer to my family, and the cost of living is much better there versus where we live now. Not to mention, I want my son to have a lot of the more positive experience that I had growing up in the midwest (four seasons, generally friendly people, outdoor living, etc.). Thanks!
