Of course Kansas has little in common with Michigan and Ohio, being in the far southwest periphery of the Midwest. The Great Lakes region states overall have very little in common with the Great Plains states. However, Michigan and Ohio are always classified as Midwest states. Great Lakes states had much heavier concentration of manufacturing, industry, and accompanied population growth throughout a large part of the late 19th through the middle 20th century. Now, those areas have diversified economies with a mixture of technology, healthcare, education, manufacturing, etc. Some areas have diversified less, and have seen out-migration of population.
