After living in Thailand for decades, my wife and I decided to attend my 50th high school reunion (May 2023) in Adrian. After a 24-hour flight we arrived at 3am at the Americas Best Value Inn & Suites in Harrisonville. The plan was to spend the week at the hotel and explore the surrounding Cass and Bates county area.

After sleeping in late we decided to go eat breakfast and told the front desk we would be back later. At 2pm we returned to the hotel only to discover our belongings had been put in plastic bags and along with our suitcases; had been placed in storage. Why?

Checkout is at 11 and during the confusion of checking in, had only paid for one night. My mistake. However, common sense says that they had our credit card information and could have easily charged a late fee of some sort.

Instead, the rude owner charged us $30 to retrieve our luggage and offered us a new room for only $125, instead of the original $80 we had paid. We declined the offer. A classic scam. I expect this kind of behavior in Southeast Asia (where the owner is from), but not in my home state of Missouri.

I'm all for cheap accommodations when I travel but I would just not stay at a brand like America's Best Value.

Here is an update:

During my short stay in this fine hotel, I noticed that the ground floor exit door was padlocked and took a photo. The truth is that I was amazed that this violation was in America and not in Thailand. After our ‘checkout’ fiasco and once I returned to Thailand, I emailed the photo to the Harrisonville Fire Dept. which promptly handled the matter.

I also complained to the Missouri AG Consumer Board about the scam and waited. This month, I received an email from them stating that they had sent several letters and emails to the hotel; but no one was responding back and did I have any other contact information.

Jokingly, I replied that I’m just some old dude living in the boonies, use Mr. Google for information and surely the Missouri AG has more power than me. And much like the hotel, they have not responded back.

That hotel is a seedy joint. I'm sorry to hear about your experience!
