Sunday night 8PM I-35 south downtown KC a mile or two before the split with I-70.

2 young guys on super sport bikes (aka crotch rockets) one with a girl on the back.

Seemed to think 100mph in a 55mph zone was a good idea in moderate traffic as they whipped in and out. I barely saw them in time...

Stats show that 1 in 44 registered supersports results in a death EACH YEAR.

Funny how people worry about thier kid going to Iraq and yet those things kill more marines than combat duty in Iraq some months.

The irony being that at the time I was driving one of the few production cars that can keep up (or outrun) a bike like that on the interstate but I don't drive like that on public roads with others around....so many cell phones, drugheads, people that had a few on their way home.....splat.

That's not unusual. Has happened to me more than once. They also fly in between the cars stalled to a stop or slow crawl on I-35 in traffic during rush hour. Apparently KS law allows them to drive between lanes and not obey the same traffic rules as vehicles with more than 2 wheels, or so I was told.

I was in college when the crotch rockets became popular. Every few months in the warm months it seemed they had to shovel someone's brains off the pavement in Lawrence because they were riding a crotch rocket and not using what ended up on the pavement without a helmet.

True, motorcycles are very dangerous. They had speedbikes, yet they shouldn't go that fast... at least when among traffic that the OP was in.

Just as with guns, its not the bike that is dangerous, its SOME of the riders. Personally I avoid riding a bike on interstates bevause of all the texters/make up appliers/generally not paying attention people behind the wheel.

And as cool and quick a ZO6 is, (Ive raced a few in SCCA and GrandAm) it would have a tough time keeping up with a 50-60 HP supermoto in sight nevermind a 150-200 HP crotch rocket that does 0-60 in about 2seconds and the quater mile in 9 seconds. You need at LEAST 800 WHP, preferablly AWD, and preferablly 900-1000 WHP, to keep a crotch rocket with a decent rider in sight. Of course, any of the aboves are really only any fun on a track.

Totally agree with all your above comments. My reference would ONLY apply to an open interstate where you are already starting at 70+ and could run them down a bit based on aerodynamics\road conditions on the top end. Anything else would be a slaughter. (The lead guy also had a passenger)

Power to weight ratios for what I'm referencing alone would be roughly 4-1 for the bike and 6-1 for the stock Z06 which speaks volumes. I think the general message is that going 40-50mph faster than the flow of traffic in an area with moderate traffic and lots of lane changing due to the splits and merges is suicidal in any vehicle.

Yeah, I've seen two guys open it up on I-35 just south of the 87th street exit and there wasn't a car in sight. I was exiting there and was the only car around.

I have zero problems with that, plenty of room etc etc etc.

My favorites are the idiots doing 75 on the highway and popping wheelies...with their helmets strapped on the back part of the seat. How useful.

Yeah, I've seen that on I-435 near K-10....in early rush-hour traffic no less. Again, empty highway in leather and helmet is one thing....but to ride a wheel at 75mph with all those inattentive mouth-breathers, pill poppers or guy that had a few too many at an afternoon golf outting? It was about a mile from where a punk in a ricer killed that olathe teacher or coach a few years back.

Dumb. Dumb. Dumb.
