Topeka (Lawrence, Shawnee, Manhattan: real estate, crime, home)

I have lived in Topeka most of my life an I have never felt unsafe nor will I ever feel unsafe. There are things to do here you just have to find them they are sometime listed on visit Topeka.com or the Shawnee county parks and recs catalog. I would consider Topeka more family orientated because it has more activities for kids and families. Sure Topeka isn't a big city like NYC or KC but it isn't a small city like emporia Kansas. Topeka isn't perfect but for what its worth I don't mind living here for rest of my life. I can always travel if I need to get away.

Topeka is a nice slice of classic Americana. It's a nice, humble place - refreshingly so. Gage Park and the Topeka Zoo are awesome. The Westboro neighborhood is beautiful. There's a nice mall, which is a rarity these days. There are urban redevelopment efforts. There are some awesome trails. And it's not far from Lawrence, Manhattan, and KC. Not to mention the cost of living, specifically real estate, is affordable. I always like a place where a person with a humble job can own a home in a safe neighborhood.

As a longtime Topeka resident, and someone who has travelled many places, I must say there are definitely worse places to live, but, there are absolutely better places!! But it's all about what your'e into. I think some peoples frustration with the city is it's city council and government lack of transparency with the community. Admitting to the exsisting problems, as opposed to throwing them under the rug would do a lot more good that one can imagine. Information galvanizes people. It's def somewhere you can leave for many years and come back, and everything is exactly the same, weither that is a good or a bad thing.....guess that depends on the individual.

To be honest, though, I worked an overnight job in Topeka for almost a year. I heard about crime and all the negatives so often, but in reality, I never experienced any crime and everyone was nice and friendly. Wait. Except that one time I was driving through the eastern part of town and some random person just walked out into the street and laid down in the road in front of my car. That was weird. Other than that, Topeka was ok. Not the prettiest city, but yeah, **** is cheap there. And they got a Denny's! OMG and Mother Earth News is like written and edited there!
